Conserving Ceramics

A research piece showcasing five ceramic cups made incorporating five different minerals: zinc, tin, copper, cobalt, and industrial waste.

Arranged following the Union for Conservation of Nature’s guidelines for classifying endangered animals, from ‘Critically Endangered’ to ‘Least Concern’.

Zinc, for example, is classified as ‘Critically Endangered’, as it is supply is reported to deplete within the next decade. Extracting it also releases potentially harmful pollutants. In La Oroya (Peru), for instance, Zinc mining caused neurological problems in over 40 percent of under-fives. The aforementioned resources are also used in other sectors, such as the rapidly growing electric vehicle industry. The economic feasibility of the ceramics industry continuing as before is therefore questionable, and the development of sustainable alternatives essential.
